Becoming more aware about assistive technology

There are a lot of things you can learn about assistive and adaptive technology and the many ways it can help individuals with disabilities broaden their opportunities in life, to be more creative in the many things they can do, communicate with others as well as become more independent in the number of things one can accomplish.

It is always important to know your students as a teacher and learn more about the areas they are weak in and where there strengths are. Students with disabilities are one in particular teachers must know and understand the type of difficulties they encounter when trying to learn things. It is crucial to know exactly what areas does the child need help in to make their learning easier on them and successful. There are a number of assistive technologies that can help a student learn at their own pace and easier to understand. As a future special education teacher, I will always put my students needs first when it comes to learning. Nothing is more important then teaching the students a number of fundamental knowledge that will help them later in life and what better way to help them learn then the use of assistive technology. In my lesson plan for each day I will always keep in mind what my student's strengths and weaknesses are and if I go fourth with my lesson plan will all my students get something out of it. Being able to help make it possible for the students with disabilities have the opportunity to learn new things everyday, being able to communicate with their peers, and built more confidence when thinking about their future and what they want to become is something a teacher will be most proud of. Because helping a child with a disabilities learn and do things they once thought they couldn't do has finally been accomplished by the teacher is simply priceless!

This video broaden my mind more into searching for the many assistive technologies that are made all over the world to help the students with disabilities move forward in life and become someone important and successful. Still today, many assistive technologies are being thought of and created to accommodate the students with disabilities. When my time comes to finally become a special education teacher I will be one to go out of my way to make sure each of my students have the opportunity to experience learning and interacting just like a regular student without a disability can do.

Overall, this video helped me to understand and know more about the many devices out there and that everyday I can learn something new about assistive technologies and how effective and beneficial they are.

Counting Different Ingredients in 2 popular local foods

[chicken kelaguen & sushi]

3rd Graders

Analyze Learners

  1. 17 Students in class

  2. 10 Male/ 7 Females

  3. 9-10 year olds

  4. Majority of the class is in the normal range of learning and displaying learning capacities.

    • 11 Chamorro, 2 Filipino, 1 Yapese, 4 Chukese

  1. Current knowledge is that most of the class is up to speed with what lessons are being taught. We are going to learn about rhyming words using some of the words the students were learning about and are familiar with.

  2. Learning Styles

    • Visual 50%

    • Kinesthetic (Hands On) 50%

State Objectives

ABCDs of strong objectives are included:

A – Action

B – Behavior

C – Condition

D – Degree

Select Media, Materials, & Media

We will be using

  • Computer [ Word Excel]

  • Local food w/ ingredients written on the outside of the wrap

  • Crayons/Markers

  • Paper to write down data gathering

  • Butcher paper for class results

Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods

  • Chalk Board: to write all the ingredients down that the students found on the food provided.

  • Paper: students will work in groups to collect all data about ingredients found.

  • Butcher/Crayons: will be used to draw the different ingredients on a butcher paper and write how much is in each food & .

  • All of these materials will be used to have the students learn the different ingredients and how much is in each food given and which food is more healthier than the other.

Require Learners Participation

  1. Explain to the students what assignment they will be doing.

  2. I will then show the students the 2 different local foods that they see at the stores.

  3. Introduce the ingredients while they are holding the food and see what different types are present in the food.

  4. Each group will be divided to focus on one particular food and write and draw what ingredients are in their food and compare with the other groups food. [using construction paper]

  5. Then the students will work together as a group and go online to research on how much of the ingredients they have on their list are used in the particular food they have & compare the other groups food and find out which is more healthier.

  6. Next the students have to come up with a number or percentage of ingredients used and plug it into a spreadsheet using excel and creating a graph or chart using the data they collected.

  7. Then, the two groups will come together and create a class chart/graph using all the data collected and compare and contrast the 2 foods and see all the results.

  8. Finally, we will have a class discussion on all the information and have the students reflect on the results about the 2 local foods that are popular & well known.

Evaluate and Revise

  1. As students are working on their activity teacher goes around and makes sure students are on task and working together as a team.

  2. Finally, we will all review the assignment and what we all learned as well as have an open discussion about the assignment and any comments about what they all feel about the 2 foods before they did the assignment and after.

Stepping Out Of My Comfort Zone

Learning is a never ending process and lesson planning is one of the keys to becoming a well organized, successful teacher. We constantly learn new things everyday and I learned a great deal on creating a good lesson plan that is detailed and if other teachers would look at the lesson plan they would easily know what its about and know exactly what to do by following the objectives.

My experience working on my first lesson plan I decided to use the Model Digital-Age Work and Learning from the NETS*T Standards. I chose this particular standard because it best describes what I want my lesson plan to reflect on and my objectives for the students learning. The standard simply states that the teacher will “ (a) demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations, (b) collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation, (c) communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats, (d) model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning” (nets for teachers 2008).

We all learn new things every day and every time I create a lesson plan I always learn something new. Stating learning objectives are very important when creating a lesson plan and I learned to always make sure it reflects on the assignment and is detailed enough to understand. In addition, when creating a lesson plan I learned to always make sure that the lesson is at the students level of understanding as well as keeping the lesson fun and interesting. Also, to make sure that before beginning a lesson the students are introduced to the new tools that are going to be used in the lesson activity such as using Excel to create a graph and learning all the steps (Microsoft).

There are always the good and bad things in creating a lesson plan depending on the topic or activity. In the lesson plan I created I enjoyed refreshing my memory when gathering data and creating a graph. I took myself out of my comfort zone and added creating a graph on my lesson plan. On the other hand, I am not really good in math so gathering data and creating a graph or chart is not really something I find fun or exciting. Overall, I learned to step out of the box once in awhile and do things I don't normally do for the purpose of the students learning and broadening their minds in using technology and the many other different ways in gathering data as well as the variety of graphs that can be explored and used.
